The most dangerous initials that represent an attack from the US Government on the freedoms of its citizens are NGI. “Next Generation Identification” sounds harmless enough. It sounds like a good idea in the fight against bad guys. We have the technology to help us identify criminals, terrorists, and the like much more easily than ever before so any steps towards integrating this technology with our law enforcement professionals at the FBI is a good thing, right?
It was 11 years ago today that the nation and the world changed forever. Terrorists had attacked on American soil in a way that affected everyone. Thousands died.
The days, months, and years following 9/11 have yielded improvements in security. There hasn’t been another major terrorist attack since. This is all good news, but at some point we have to draw the line between improving security and removing our rights. NGI represents a dangerous step towards removing those rights.
As I posted on Techi:
Unfortunately, human nature leads people towards abuses. Power gets abused. Position gets abused. Technologies get abused. NGI represents the next major step towards a society that is watched, profiled, and eventually controlled “for our own good.” It doesn’t matter whether you believe our best interests are in mind. It only matters that our best interests will not be upheld regardless of what the initial intentions are.
